Teaching Portfolio Guides

Teaching Portfolios are increasingly used in hiring and retention questions as well as for self-assessment of professional development.

Attached to this page are a number of PDF files. These were downloaded from the internet on January 6 2013 or later. Some were PDF files hosted on the internet, some were regular webpages now saved as PDF. Each page includes the original location and date of download.

There is no particular order in the following list, other than alphabetical by title. Nor are these particular recommendations, just a sampling of guidelines available on the...

Teaching Goals Inventory

This is a computer-based assessment (inventory). You indicate how important a particular teaching objective is for any given course (example, your 9am Intermediate English Composition course) and you will immediately receive a diagnostic that compares your priorities to others.

The PDF file attached works (it sends your responses to the USA-based server and responses open in your default web-browswer) or you can do it all online from this link.

Statement of Teaching Philosophy

A statement of teaching philosophy is a cornerstone of both the teaching portfolio and many job interviews!

What's my philosophy?

Consider breaking down that broad question into component parts --

What do you believe about teaching? What do you believe about learning? Why? How is that played out in your classroom? How does student identity and background make a difference in how you teach? What do you still struggle with in terms of teaching and student learning?

Another useful tip is to think about what you don't like in a teacher. Reflecting on what you don't like...

BIELT

The British Institute for English Language Teaching (BIELT) was a short-lived project aiming to produce recognizable higher professional qualifications for those who chose to not pursue formal higher education (e.g., Masters in TESOL, English Education, Linguistics or Applied Linguistics, or Doctorates within the field of English Language Teaching or related sciences).

Rather than analyzing the organization's successes and failures, the point here is to look at some of the tools that were developed in pursuit of their aim to document continuing professional development activities....

50 Ways to Develop Professionally

There are lots of ways to classify Professional Development, and not everyone agrees even on which things can, or cannot, be included.

Some ideas for professional development listed by Mary Shepard Wong (2011, attached) include:

Keep a journal and reflect on teaching. Learn a new language. Record and view one's teaching. Be observed by a peer. Observe other teachers. Compile a portfolio. Engage in team teaching. Find a mentor. Engage in action research.

David Deubelbeiss has his own "50 tips" on a page in his blog - http://ddeubel.edublogs.org/2013/01/05/50-professional-...

Why am I a teacher? What kind of teacher am I? What kind of teacher do I want to be? What do I need to do to get there  (to get that job, to perform...
