Sonyong Beattie - Picture Books: A fun way to learn English - Daejeon 2019

This demonstration intends to provide teachers with the communications skills needed to approach early primary school learners. The methods used to teach include introduction to the short and meaningful sentence structure, rhetorical and non-rhetorical questions, and use of color and objects related to the text.

The goal of this presentation is to equip the instructors with the foundation needed to teach what is encoded in the picture book. This activity of using the picture book is to show that the instructor can encourage dialogue through key words and expressions. In turn, the...

Melissa Watkins - Including "Missing Voices" - Yongin 2019

“Representation matters” has become a bit of a catchphrase due to social justice awareness efforts, but perhaps it has a different meaning for native speakers teaching English as a foreign or second language. English has undeniably become a global language, and the average English speaker speaks a global variant of English and uses the language largely with other speakers of world English rather than with the stereotypical Western native speaker so highly coveted in many classrooms. Some studies have explored the effectiveness of non-native speakers of English as language teachers in...

Kara Mac Donald - Drawing on Skillsets Outside of ELT

There is an immense benefit to understanding skill transfer: how skills from a previous field of study, profession, and/or personal discipline inform you as a language teacher. There is even a greater value in explicitly drawing on this diverse skillset for instructional practice, as making conscious connections between the overlap of skillsets permits deliberate and effective use of these skills.

Dr. Birsen Tütüniş - Positive Psychology, Positive Discipline

Classroom management systems are the processes adopted by teachers and school managers to maintain appropriate behavior. However, the variety of classroom management systems sometimes causes confusion between positive discipline and classroom management. Positive discipline encourages students to focus on self-discipline, responsibility, cooperation, and problem solving skills.

Jeonju-North Jeolla KOTESOL December 2019 Workshop

December 14, 2019 - 2:45pm to 5:00pm

Abstract

Personalisation and the Self

As teachers, it’s difficult to keep content relevant and motivating to learners. It is also hard to predict what learners will find interesting. Personalisation can help to make learning more meaningful without isolating or disregarding a learner’s interests. However, what happens when those learners haven’t confronted their own interests or haven’t had the space to, with endless exams and achievement targets?

In this workshop we will discuss how learners can explore their sense of ‘self’ and how they can apply this knowledge to...
