The Suwon-Gyeonggi KOTESOL chapter’s September workshop features two speakers, George E.K. Whitehead presenting “Making It Work: Adapted Project Based Learning for South Korean English Classrooms” and Yejin Kim presenting “Creativity and Community Building through Classic and Graphic Novels”
As always, attendance is free and refreshments will be provided.

Abstracts:
“Making It Work: Adapted Project Based Learning for South Korean English Classrooms”
In this workshop participants will first be introduced to the key features of Project Based Learning (PBL) at which time they will be urged to critically reflect on the practicality of implementation in their current teaching contexts. Participants will then be guided through practical ways in which PBL may be adapted for use in South Korean English classrooms along with tips on how they may assess their learners. Finally, participants will engage in a creative group project in which they will be asked to apply what they have learned by designing their own adapted PBL lesson. Through participation in this workshop, attendees can develop a deeper understanding of PBL along with practical ways to utilize PBL in their classrooms.
“Creativity and Community Building through Classic and Graphic Novels”
In the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, teachers including Yejin Kim have though about the roles of teachers. This social change gave her a chance to ponder what and how to teach. She decided to focus on two key competencies: creative thinking and developing a sense of community, with her role being a facilitator of learning. She will share what she has been doing with classic and graphic novels and her struggles while reading in the English classroom.
Speaker Bios:
George E.K. Whitehead is an assistant professor in the Graduate School of TESOL at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies. He has been involved in English language education for over 20 years and has held professional positions in Canada, Japan, and South Korea. His research interests include language teacher education and development, language teacher educator development, language teacher leadership, and the promotion of context-specific language learning and teaching practices around the world. His published work has appeared in journals such as System, RELC Journal, and TESOL Quarterly.
Yejin Kim has four years of experience as an English teacher in Gyeonggi province. She is currently teaching in Pureun Middle School in Hwaseong-si. She focuses on encouraging her students to read in English, both intensively and extensively. She tries to build her identity as an English teacher by sharing her experiences with other teachers in a learning community called Pyeonghangseon.
