The L2 Instructor's Role in Developing Learners' Reading Skills: Monitored Extensive Reading
Abstract
Extensive Reading (ER) has proven effective in developing L2 learners' proficiency. ER has mostly been examined in comparison to Intensive Reading (IR). However, this study investigates ER in comparison with Monitored Extensive Reading (MER). Which is more effective? The study provides a definition of MER and suggests principles for its implementation. 143 freshman university students participated in this study: ER group and MER group. The participants were required to read a minimum number of words on a weekly basis and were given the choice to use print and/or online books. The results favored the EMR group who outperformed the ER group in the reading comprehension and essay-writing post-tests. The results imply a need for more noticing and explicit attention to the reading material: content & structure.
Biographicals
Rachid Bezzazi is a language instructor at Yuan-Ze University and a PhD applicant in TESOL at National Taiwan Normal University, Taiwan. His research and instructional interests include Extensive Reading (ER), Monitored Extensive Reading (MER), Cooperative Learning (CL), and Cooperative Teaching (CT). He is also interested in the effect of CLIL in Taiwan.
