From Classroom to Reelworld Content: Job-ready Video Skills

Summary

This one-hour online workshop is designed for participants who want to gain practical video-making skills. The goal is to help participants create higher-quality teaching videos, content for classroom materials, and short films or social media content. The session is split into two parts. The first part will cover filming basics such as shots, angles, lighting, and master shots, and the second will cover editing tips and strategies such as common editing styles and recommended editing apps for a range of contexts. Participants will watch example clips from films, dramas, commercials, and TikTok videos to notice quality choices in shooting and editing. After that, a short breakout room activity encourages discussion and analysis of clips.

Ashley Ford-Mihashi is a lecturer at Nagoya City University in Japan and has been incorporating filmmaking activities into her language classroom for over 15 years. She explores how filmmaking can be used as a creative and meaningful activity for students to express themselves and utilize language skills. In her paper, “Positive and Negative Outcomes in Creative Project-Based Learning: Two EFL Projects” (Ford and Kluge, 2015), she situated filmmaking projects within a Project-based Language Learning framework. Over the years, and has been fortunate to give over 30 talks and workshops aimed toward teachers on filmmaking. She has also been involved in organizing several student showcasing events and served as Film Festival Chair for KOTESOL’s 2021 Reel to Real National Conference. She is continuously dedicated to helping students find their own voices and launched the Reel Voices Language Learning Film Festival so students can take pride in watching their ideas come to life on the big screen.

Kinsella Valies teaches at Sophia University in Japan and holds a Master’s degree in Applied Linguistics from the University of Limerick. Her teaching and research focus on filmmaking and video-based activities for student empowerment, speaking assessment, tabletop role-playing games (TTRPGs) for authentic communication, and the professional experiences of Black women in Japanese academic and workplace contexts. She has long integrated film and video projects into her classrooms and visiting speaker initiatives to promote student engagement, critical thinking, and meaningful human connections. Her work on film in language education includes “Are You Talking to Me?”, which explores how working adults develop communicative English through film-based learning, and the three-year Be My Guest project, examining the impact of recurring guest-speaker and video-mediated interaction on learner engagement. Ms. Valies is a co-investigator on the Reel Voices project and a co-organizer of the Reel Voices Language Learning Film Festival. She is active in international professional organizations, currently serving as Chair of the JALT National Elections Committee, and was the 2025 Kevin Cleary Invited Speaker at the JALT National Conference, where she presented on collaborative research practices.
