Abstract

“Digital Language Learning and Teaching in the Present Moment”

The fourth industrial revolution has seen the convergence of innovation and technology led by AI (Artificial Intelligence), big data, and IoT (the Internet of Things), and it has restructured industry across all sectors, including that of education. These changes have been disruptive, have seen changes in how our students interact with us as teachers, and have led to a transformation in how we as teachers prepare and provide learning opportunities in and outside of the classroom. These changes have already seen transformations in how we access content and how much content is increasingly becoming available to us. Perhaps there is now too much, with quality difficult to assess. The aim of this workshop then is to help teachers understand what digital language learning and teaching means today, what the benefits are, how it can lead to differentiated learning and teaching, and how key technologies from among the plethora of tools available can be applied in different teaching and learning contexts to provide learning opportunities for students. Importantly too, a means of analyzing and evaluating technologies that teachers might seek to use with learners will be presented, alongside the workshopping of professional development skills among cohorts in a community of practice.
