Title: Activating Active Listening
Abstract: Active listening can involve a range of skills beyond simply paying close attention and recalling what was said. Listeners can support speakers through short responses and questions, and they can use clarification questions or paraphrasing to resolve gaps in comprehension. In discussion or mediation, skilled listeners may help speakers identify their emotions and values or articulate reasons for their positions. This workshop will demonstrate a number of short, focused activities that invite listeners to practice responding to speakers in different ways. The activities were designed for high-beginning to high-intermediate university students in listening and speaking classes.
Bio: Heidi Vande Voort Nam teaches general English and English teacher-training courses at Chongshin University in Seoul. Within KOTESOL, she is a facilitator of the KOTESOL Christian Teachers SIG, a presenter for KOTESOL Teacher Training, and an administrator of the national KOTESOL Facebook Group. This year, she is also serving as Secretary for the KOTESOL National Council.
Title: Speak Up! - Getting Students to Actively Use English in Class
Abstract: One common problem many ESL teachers share is breaking up the Korean usage during lessons. Not all, but many schools and academies require students to forgo their native tongue for the full class, and even threaten demerits or punishments for not doing so. And yet, we commonly find the students quickly losing track and interest, drowning our efforts to keep momentum. But not only is it fully understandable why students revert back to Korean amongst themselves… It is manageable. This workshop’s goal is to provide suggestions to increase active speaking practice through activity-based lectures, persistent positive reinforcement and goals, and finding ways to help students feel more at ease with us.
Bio: Jasmine Collins teaches speaking skills for both elementary and middle school students at Wesley Academy in Bucheon, Gyeonggido. She has been teaching in Korea for seven years, and has taught most ages, including university level adults. She came in through the government program TaLK (Teach and Learn in Korea) and later delved into private academies.
