Presenter: Anjee DiSanto (Chonbuk National University)
Abstract:
Adapted from a previous KOTESOL conference session, this presentation will offer simple yet versatile advice to improve the teaching of writing (and more!) by musing on the ways in which teaching writing bears a resemblance to the process of writing itself, particularly fiction. Through the quotes and advice of authors ranging from Mark Twain to Stephen King, seven key tips will be covered to benefit those teaching at almost any level, but primarily high-beginner and up. This advice of the writing masters is often poignant, sometimes humorous. Though in most cases the wisdom was meant for aspiring novelists, there are strong themes present to boost us up as inspiring teachers as well. The goal is to use these insights to make writing more salient, accessible, and practical in the classroom. In bridging the gap between author and educator, the presenter will also offer her own related observations collected from seven years of teaching various levels of second-language writing.
