The Presentation: Why Should I Do It? Why Should I Care?

This presentation explores the twin issues of teacher and student motivation. For many of us, getting students to want to participate in class is a fundamental characteristic of being a good teacher, but how can we do this, and why does an activity that was motivating in one class fail in the next? It is not enough to simply look at our students; we need to look at ourselves. Teacher motivation is the foundation upon which student motivation is built, we’ve all had those cranky, burned-out teachers who go through the motions but whose hearts really aren’t into their jobs. I will be looking at recognizing the initial stages of burnout and various coping mechanisms that we can use to combat it. This presentation is a mixture of lecture and workshop and will run as two 45-minute sessions with a break between.
The Presenter
Brad Serl came to South Korea in 2002. Since that time he has worked with students as young as six and as old as seventy-five. His undergraduate major is in Rhetoric and Composition from Thompson Rivers University. His M.A. is in Applied Linguistics from the University of Birmingham, and was completed in September 2010. He is currently president of the Busan-Gyeongnam Chapter of KOTESOL and is a coordinator in the teacher training department at Busan University of Foreign Studies, in addition to working as a tutor for the Birmingham CELS MA program. Brad enjoys mountain biking and cooking, and takes a significant amount of guilty pleasure in all manner of geekery. Brad’s research interests are in teacher motivation, student motivation, and integrated skills language teaching. He is planning on beginning an EdD in 2014.
