Linguistic and Cultural Studies as Means of Successful Development of Intercultural Competence

Abstract

In this study, I explore the role of linguistic and cultural studies (as an independent subject in higher education settings) in the successful development of intercultural competence. By examining the integration of language acquisition and cultural education, I highlight how these elements collectively enhance students' ability to navigate and engage with diverse cultural contexts. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, I analyzed curriculum design, instructional strategies, and student outcomes in various educational settings. Findings indicate that combining linguistic proficiency with cultural awareness fosters critical thinking, empathy, and effective communication across cultures. Case studies demonstrate practical applications and underscore the importance of experiential learning and immersive cultural experiences. I will conclude with recommendations for educators to develop curricula that promote intercultural competence, thereby preparing students to become globally competent individuals capable of contributing positively to a multicultural world.

About the Presenter

Aleksei Nekhaev graduated from a teacher training university and has 29 years of teaching experience. Aleksei is a teacher, teacher trainer, and researcher. For the last 10 and a half years, he has been living and working in Thailand. Now he is the director of the Language and Lifelong Learning Center and a lecturer at Shinawatra University. His research interests are problems in teaching pronunciation, using literature in ELT classrooms, teaching life skills, psychology in ELT, and cultural studies in teaching English.
