Unlocking Vocabulary Growth: The Untapped Potential of Informal Learning Experiences

Manoj Manuel (University of Technology and Applied Sciences, Muscat, Oman)

Abstract

Though formal classroom teaching and learning is the prime focus of contemporary vocabulary research and pedagogical approaches, in this presentation, I will explore the significant potential of effective informal learning contexts to guide and support vocabulary development. The primary objective is to emphasize and explain the valuable contributions that informal learning experiences can provide in the process of vocabulary learning. Based on established theories of incidental and independent language learning, I will carefully examine the ways in which an individual's engagement with a variety of activities, such as recreational reading, media consumption, and extracurricular academic or leisure pursuits, can effectively develop meaningful vocabulary growth and retention. I will also propose insights that may direct the design of curricula and pedagogical approaches, In addition, I will look into possible avenues for future research in this important yet unexplored area of vocabulary learning.
