Developing Intercultural Competency in the English Conversation Classroom Through a "Han-versation" Dictionary

Abstract
The demands of the 21st century economy require students to use English as a tool for intercultural communication. To meet these demands, this workshop presents a teaching tool for conversation classes which encourages university and adult students to negotiate their culture and use of English in relation to that of their foreign teacher. Students compile a dictionary of words unique to the English spoken in Korea, complete with definitions, translations to other varieties of English, and examples of usage.
The focus of the workshop will be an interactive demonstration of the process of creating a dictionary entry using intercultural communication skills. Additionally, there will be an overview of the action research exploring the use of the dictionary project in an intermediate university conversation class.
