Adapting Articles from the Internet: Materials Development in TEFL

Abstract
Occasionally teachers could not find appropriate materials in commercial books, prompting them to develop their own materials. This workshop aims to demonstrate how teachers could adapt a text from the internet for learning material by simplifying the language and the concepts. Complicated sentence structures could be made simpler and unknown words are replaced with the more familiar synonyms. To make the text more motivating , teachers could make use of their creativity in designing the layout of the text. In addition, character building is included in this material by exploring the moral values implied in the text; therefore, teachers improve not only the learners' linguistic ability but also their characters. The participants of this workshop are required to bring a laptop to practice the above procedures. They will work in groups to browse the internet, select online articles, and attempt to adapt these articles to produce highly readable texts.
