KOTESOL International Conference 2016

(Concurrent Session)

Keri Ann Moore, Tokyo International University

Critical Reading for the Information Age

Abstract
Teaching critical thinking skills has been proposed as one way to prepare students with the skills they will need in the future (Bean, 2011). This workshop will introduce double-sided journals, a technique for teaching critical reading, just one skill associated with critical thinking. We will practice creating a double-sided journal and will discuss several ways to adapt it to varying contexts and in many ways that lend nicely to a communicative language classroom. Workshop participants will then have the opportunity to adapt a double-sided journal assignment to their teaching contexts and purposes. Additionally, this workshop will introduce several resources for further reading on practical advice and activities for promoting critical thinking in the classroom.
