Talking About Talking with Leonie Overbeek

How do you raise a problematic subject with your students?

When are they old enough to discuss injustice?

What do you need to talk about if you are concerned with social justice?

As a member of the KOTESOL Social Justice SIG (special interest group), I wrestle with these concerns. Many parents and teachers shy away from serious discussions with students. Especially discussions about gender, about the future of the world, about their future in the world.

In this workshop participants will be challenged to explore some sensitive issues, and consider how we can have positive experiences with our students when discussing these, and how to avoid offending anyone during such discussions.

Presenter’s bio

Leonie Overbeek has worked in several sectors - mining, analytical chemistry, business advice, tutoring, administration, technical support - and for the last eleven years has taught in public schools in Korea at elementary and middle school level. She believes in seizing each day, making the most of opportunities, and tackling new projects. She will be moving to Bulgaria in 2019.
