YoKo's Year-End Celebration

As we approach the end of 2023, it's time to reflect on the achievements and milestones we've reached together. Join us for an unforgettable time of reflection and celebration at our Year-End Party on December 16!

1. Presentation

"Academic Publishing: What? Why? How?" by Joe Greenwood and Nick Caballero

Gain valuable insights into the world of academic publishing as esteemed speakers Joe Greenwood and Nick Caballero guide us through the intricacies of the process. Whether you're an academic or simply curious about the impact of research dissemination, this presentation promises to be enlightening and engaging.

Abstract: Have you ever considered publishing in academia, but been unsure where to start? Then this workshop might be for you! Nick and Joe will discuss what academic publishing can look like, how to get started, and why it can benefit you. The language and process will also be de-mystified, and you may just leave this presentation with the knowledge and confidence to get started on your first publication!

Joe Greenwood currently works as an Assistant Professor of English at Yeonsung University in South Korea.  Joe has been teaching English for ten years, as well as working in the HE sectors in both the UK and South Korea. Holder of an MA TESOL and Applied Linguistics and a PG Dip TESOL, Joe is currently working towards his PhD by published works. His research centers around eliciting the student voice in HE to improve the efficacy of course design and delivery.

Nick Caballero is an English instructor at Hanguk University of Foreign Studies and has been teaching English in South Korea for nearly ten years. His research interests include motivation studies, self-efficacy, and second language acquisition studies.

2. Special Announcement

Restart of SIG on Teaching Young Learners by André Jacobs and Kang Chanhyung

Exciting news awaits our educators and those passionate about teaching young learners! We're thrilled to announce the relaunch of KOTESOL's Special Interest Group (SIG) focused on teaching young learners. Join us as we discuss our plans, gather ideas, and lay the foundation for a vibrant community dedicated to fostering effective and innovative teaching methods for our youngest members.

Chanhyung Kang is the CEO of Kang & Kriel Recruitment and TEFLNews.org, with over 30 years of teaching experience in private English education, as well as specializing in recruiting TEFL teachers. Even though he is new to KOTESOL, his commitment to educator welfare is longstanding, as evidenced by his advocacy for foreign teachers in Korea, particularly in addressing labor and immigration challenges. Through TEFLNews.org, he has created a platform for supporting these educators' rights and needs. His proposal for a Special Interest Group within KOTESOL aims to extend this support, fostering a comprehensive network for the professional and personal growth of English language educators especially in the private sector in Korea.

André Jacobs has been working in Korea for the past 22 years and he has done most of his teaching in private academies. For ten years he was co-running an academy and has gained valuable insight into the industry as a teacher and director. André is an independent contractor now, but he still teaches at an academy as well as an afterschool program. Teaching young learners is without a doubt his passion and calling. Having spent this much time in the English education industry, André is intimately aware of issues related to the professional development of teachers as well as visa and workplace difficulties. By creating and supporting the TOYL SIG he hopes to provide the kind of support and development that he thinks is needed for teachers of young learners. André currently holds the position of Secretary in the Yongin Chapter and played a significant role in organizing the recent KOTESOL National Conference as the conference chair. In recognition of his outstanding contributions, he was honored with the KOTESOL 'Stepping Up' Award.
