~It's time for JNJ KOTESOL's May workshop and something a little different. Longtime KOTESOL member and presenter Roger Fusselman is presenting for both hours on comedy sketches, stand-up comedy and improv for the English classroom. And for those of you who want more, KOTESOL's national conference will be held in Daegu at Kyungpook National University on May 31st from 10am-6pm.
~Stand-up comedy, improvisational theater, and comedy sketches require different aspects of communicative competence. Knowing how comedians create comedy can expand and stimulate English language and skills you had not realized your students have. This highly interactive workshop lays bare the nature of comedy. It looks at stand-up, sketch-writing (writing short funny plays), and improv (a spontaneous form of theater). The audience discovers how these three kinds of comedy are made. It shows how teachers can apply the wisdom in and virtues of these art forms to their students' advantage. The workshop concludes with insights into learner issues regarding these techniques.
Roger Fusselman (MA-TESL) is a long-time member of KOTESOL with considerable experience as an English teacher, curriculum developer, TESOL trainer, and comedian. He currently teaches English conversation at Sookmyung Women's University. As a member of Seoul City Improv, a stand-up with Stand-Up Seoul, and a scriptwriter for Seoul Players and the White Box Theatre, Roger has been a reliable humorist in the expat community.
