Join us for the year-end workshops at GNUE.
Workshop 1
Title: Song Lyrics and Children's Literature as Road Maps for Creative Writing
Abstract: Teaching creative writing in a second language can have numerous roadblocks: mismatched student levels, lack of vocabulary, and lack of confidence, to name a few. Students (and teachers!) often think, "How can I even start?" In this environment, two useful, accessible tools to drive students' creative potential are popular songs and children's books -- even when teaching adults. Whether classic or modern, these authentic sources can serve not just as examples of creative writing concepts, but as "road maps" to follow or mimic before students set out on their own writing paths. In this session, let's steer straight into some examples using everything from Taylor Swift to the Beastie Boys to Dr. Seuss!
Presenter: Anjee Disanto, Wonkwang University
Anjee has been teaching at Korean universities for almost 20 years, throughout which she has had a strong interest in incorporating authentic materials like songs and children's literature into classes. Four years ago, she created the curriculum for her university's Creative Writing and Pop Songs courses, which she has taught to amazing students of all majors and ability levels since.
Workshop 2
Title: Writing Warmth - A Korean Calligraphy Workshop for the Season
Abstract: The presenter will introduce the fundamentals of Hangul calligraphy and demonstrate how simple brush strokes can transform Korean letters into works of art. Participants will begin by practicing the basic consonants and vowels, then move on to writing short words that will be used inside a holiday card. The workshop will conclude with an invitation to create a card using a brush and seasonal greetings. This session aims to offer a thoughtful and enjoyable creative experience to share during the festive season.
Bio: Kyeong-a Lee is a calligrapher and florist who currently serves as the village coordinator of Seo-nam-dong in Gwangju. She has taught calligraphy and integrated art classes in career-education programs across various educational settings, from elementary through high school.
We will also hold annual Elections at this meeting.
