Gwangju-Jeonnam KOTESOL Double Workshop + Dinner

Join us on Saturday, October 10, from 2:00–5:00 PM for an afternoon of two workshops: a hands-on video-making workshop with Bryan Hale, followed by our new Swap Shop, where teachers can share practical classroom ideas with one another.
Workshop 1: Effective Video-Making Projects in the English Language Classroom
Video-making projects can create rich opportunities for creativity, collaboration, expression, and meaningful language use. They can work well with many age groups and in a variety of contexts, including public schools, universities, and private institutions, as part of regular coursework or special programs such as camps.
However, these projects also present challenges around the quality of participation and language practice. Drawing on more than eight years of developing and refining video projects in the English language classroom, this hands-on workshop will explore practical ways to make them effective and accessible for students.
Participants will try out activities used to help students engage with video-making projects purposefully, including activities that support storyboarding and experimentation with shot design.
We will also reflect on key strategies and decisions around group organisation, maintaining a feasible level of challenge and a focus on English use, and the intersection between project design and school or institutional culture. Participants will come away from the workshop not only with useful activities to include in a video-making project sequence, but also with strategies for encouraging and maintaining meaningful English use and a sense of purpose among learners.
The Presenter
Bryan Hale currently teaches at Jeonnam Foreign Language High School in Naju. He has been teaching in Jeonnam public schools for over eight years, and has been conducting and refining video-making projects during that time. Bryan is a lifetime member of the Gwangju-Jeonnam KOTESOL chapter and has served in various roles throughout KOTESOL. He holds a Master of Applied Linguistics (TESOL) from the University of New England, Australia.
Workshop 2: Swap Shop
Bring a lesson. Swap an idea. Take something new back to your classroom.
For our Swap Shop, members and nonmembers alike are invited to share a short lesson or classroom activity that can be introduced in 5–7 minutes.
Your contribution might be:
- A lesson for young learners, children, teens, or university students
- An EFL classroom activity
- A teacher-training activity
- A reflective practice exercise
- Something you have tried, adapted, or developed yourself
You don't need to give a full workshop. Just bring one useful idea and share it briefly with fellow teachers. Come ready to exchange practical ideas and leave with some new ones to try.

Dinner after the workshops
After the event, we'll head to LeJamin in Dongmyungdong for dinner and conversation. Dinner is optional, and everyone attending will pay for their own meal.
