What is the Gyeonggi Teacher Training Program?
The Gyeonggi KOTESOL Teacher Training Program (GKT) is an experimental teacher training program meant to provide training and support to both hagwon and public school teachers. This program aims to introduce trainees to the wider worlds of TEFL, education, and linguistics in a way that can connect advanced concepts to their daily teaching contexts, allow them to reflect on their teaching in a more developed way, and foster an interest in further professional development as an EFL instructor. The training is meant to be delivered by highly-experienced teachers from a variety of backgrounds and expertise, who will be recognized for their efforts in the form of certificates.
The objectives of this program can be summarized using question words, which allows for a more structured exposition of the program and its objectives:
Who: for early-career hagwon and public school EFL teachers in Korea by long-term instructors from KOTESOL who are currently residing in Korea (or who have extensive working experience)
What: Modules with a short quiz and reflection exercise that result in KOTESOL-recognized certificates for both the presenter and the attendee.
Where: Various cities throughout Korea and on Zoom
When: On Saturdays or Sundays, on a monthly to bi-monthly basis
Why: Improving the practice of entry-level and relatively new EFL teachers in Korea
Promoting the professional development of both presenters and attendees
How: Presenters will work in coordination with the Program Lead to develop training modules, which will eventually be uploaded to Udemy as a full training course. Sessions may also be delivered on Zoom or as in-person chapter events with approval of the coordinator. Upon completion of the seminars, attendees will complete a multiple-choice quiz based on the module, as well as a short reflection. Completion of all of the preceding for a certain number of modules will result in a certificate of appreciation for the attendee, and developers will also get a certificate.
