The Education, Conflict and Peace Lab at Seoul National University
The Education, Conflict and Peace Lab at Seoul National University (ECP Lab @ SNU) is managed by Dr Kevin Kester, a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in the Department of Education. The ECP Lab @ SNU conducts education, research and service in the areas of conflict resolution, international cooperation, and peace education with the twofold goal: (1) to develop a world-class research and teaching portfolio concerning conflict and peacebuilding through education, focused especially on the Asia-Pacific region; and (2) to develop students' research and teaching capabilities through rigorous applied training. In this regard, the ECP Lab oversees several research initiatives and the teaching of courses related to Education, Conflict and Peace within the Department of Education and the Global Education Cooperation Program at SNU, as well as research consultancies to international organizations.
The Lab is currently overseeing a National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF) funded study to investigate a conflict-sensitive approach to higher education pedagogy in Korea. It is from this project that the presentation to DCC emerges. Drawing on lessons learned from university educators in Afghanistan and Somaliland the study aims to develop a practical conflict-sensitive toolkit for Korean-based educators teaching students in and from conflict-affected contexts. The 2-year project is expected to lead to a number of research outputs, including high-profile journal articles, conference talks, and workshops.
The ECP Lab is expected to grow four-fold within the next three years. Master's and PhD applicants interested in pursuing research in the intersectional areas of education, development, global justice, peacebuilding, conflict transformation, and nonviolent social change are encouraged to apply. Ana Velasco, a current MA student in the lab, explains her view of the research group: “the lab is engaged substantially on researching Global South-led initiatives regarding peace education and the creation of a culture of peace through the analysis of local initiatives. This analysis will allow the creation of a valuable portfolio of best practices and experiences that could be useful toward enhancing practices in the Asia-Pacific region.” For more on the ECP Lab @ SNU, see https://kevinkester.weebly.com/
About the speaker: Kevin Kester is an educational sociologist. He researches and teaches educational responses to conflict, peace and development in local and global contexts. His most recent book is The United Nations and Higher Education: Peacebuilding, Social Justice and Global Cooperation for the 21st Century. He received his training at the universities of Cambridge, Columbia, Toronto, and the UN.
