Writing in the EFL world is a victim of product-oriented approaches. Teachers push for results because curriculum requirements often prevent us from properly coaching the process. It takes time. But teaching the basics is not as tricky as you might think. Assuming that your students know how to compose a sentence, they are ready to understand the fundamental purpose and organization of a garden-variety humanities-style paragraph. Our approach of systematizing the noticing of patterns in good paragraphs will not only improve the quality of your students written content, but it will set a standard that should reduce carelessness in other areas like letter formation, neatness and the thoughtful use of punctuation.

This workshop will demonstrate a field-tested model for teaching fundamental writing skills to Korean undergraduate students. You can expect to see examples of techniques and results that should add energy and effectiveness to your classroom writing activities.

John Healy, Stephen Schuit and Tommy Vorst are professors in the Foreign Language Institute at Yeungnam University.

John Healy helps Korean university students develop confidence in using English. His current research interests are in academic writing and learner motivation. He blogs at grabsix.com.

Stephen Schuit has had a lifelong fascination with both education and writing. A former Peace Corps Volunteer in Korea, he is on the faculty of Yeungnam University and blogging about his now and then expat experience at KoreanBookends.blogspot.com/
