In this workshop participants will clarify the definition and goal of “academic” nonfiction, review the writing process from brainstorm to output, complete writing exercises on categorization, outlining and providing detail, write one 8- and one 11- sentence structured paragraph, understand first-hand how our students feel when we ask them to write, and rediscover your own writing style in light of the TCEC model (Topic sentence, Claim sentence, Evidence sentence, Conclusion sentence.) The presenter will show how students easily absorb the simple theory, develop critical thinking skills, and write clear, direct, unified, coherent, structured, TOEFL-style, nonfiction paragraphs (both general- and specific knowledge paragraphs). As a bonus to them, our students’ L1 writing skill will improve as a result of our L2 writing instruction. Please note: regardless of your students’ ages or L2 language abilities, you will take something useful from this workshop that you can adapt and use in your classroom!
