Phonological Pitfalls for English Teachers and Learners in Korea (Steve Garrigues, Ph.D.)

All EFL teachers in Korea, whether Korean or native-speaker, realize that there are certain sounds that cause Korean students more trouble than other sounds. But there are other issues that may not be so apparent, which tend to be overlooked by many English teachers. And there are underlying reasons for all pronunciation problems, which lie in the phonological structure of the two languages. Many of these are what we may call "phonological pitfalls", because they are often unexpected and unrecognized, by Korean English teachers and NESTs alike.

Dr. Garrigues holds the position of Professor at Kyungpook National University in Daegu, South Korea, where he has been teaching since 1986. He did his BA in Japanese history at Sophia University in Tokyo, and both his MA (Colorado State University) and PhD (Lucknow University, India) are in cultural anthropology. He has been a member of KOTESOL from its very beginning, and served for a number of years as the President of the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Chapter.

The Flipped Classroom Model for a Task-based Student Centric University Freshman

English Program (Dieter Knowle, Ph.D.)

The advent of learner-centered, task based teaching has led to the flipped classroom model used by elementary through highschool classes and beyond. The core idea is to flip the instructional approach; instruction that used to occur in the classroom is done with teacher-created videos and interactive lessons that are now accessed at home or anywhere, prior to class. The classroom becomes a place devoted to exercises, projects, tasks or discussions and a place to engage in collaborative learning. For the flipped classroom to be successful, the teacher must provide pre- and post-activities in addition the tasks done during the class.

Dr. Dieter Knowle has taught in Korea for eleven years now and currently is a member of the Faculty of Liberal Education, Kyungpook National University teaching credit and non-credit English courses. His interests include engagement theory as well as CALL, MALL (both mobile and multimedia), and gamification in the ESL classroom.
