Mandatory vaccination Calendar - what do we need to know?

Mandatory vaccination Calendar - what do we need to know?

In Bulgaria, as in other European countries, there are mandatory vaccines and those that are recommended. Mandatory vaccines are described in detail in the mandatory vaccination calendar approved by the Ministry of Health.

Detailed information can be found on the official website of the Ministry of Health, and we recommend that you really take a look at it, as there have been some changes since 2020.

In the following lines, we aim only to briefly introduce you to the difference between mandatory and recommended vaccines, as well as when they can or should be given.

Mandatory vaccines are free and provided by the State. The first mandatory vaccine (against hepatitis B) is administered to a newborn within 24 hours after birth, and the second (against tuberculosis) 48 hours after birth. Until the 4th month, the child is given one or two vaccines every month in accordance with the schedule of mandatory immunization.

The following mandatory vaccinations and repeat vaccinations are carried out at the age of 7 months, 12, 13 and 16 months. Mandatory immunization and re-immunization continue at the age of 6, 7 and 12 years. At the age of 17, repeated immunization against tetanus and diphtheria is carried out at the age of 25 and every 10 years after that (at the age of 35, at the age of 45, etc.).

Hydrolyzed collagen has also been successfully tested as a component in the treatment of joint pain and bone density reduction. However, the tests are incomplete (some are even contradictory), and scientific commissions have not yet reached a consensus on the benefits of collagen for joint health.

The vaccines are given by your therapist, in this case a pediatrician, if your child is involved. They should inform you about the upcoming immunization or repeat immunization, but you can also keep track of the mandatory immunization schedule yourself.

A prerequisite for vaccination is a healthy person who should receive it.

In addition to mandatory vaccinations, there are also recommended ones that you pay for yourself. These are vaccines against hepatitis A, influenza, chickenpox, human papillomavirus and rotavirus gastroenteritis. In some cases, the recommended vaccines may be provided by the Government. A typical example is the flu vaccine, which pensioners over the age of 65 receive for free due to the coronavirus pandemic.
