After the KOTESOL National Conference, KOTESOL members seeking even more professional development opportunities and teachers based in Seoul looking for ideas and inspiration to enhance their pedagogy are welcome to join the Seoul KOTESOL Chapter's Fall Presentations for 2023.
We will have two presentations by KOTESOL and Korea veteran expats on offer for this event: Duane Henning with a presentation titled Teaching in Multi-Level Classes: The Power of Self-Regulation and Language Cards, followed by Melvin Dixon's Building Connections for Better Instruction: Strategies to Enhance Learning.
In conjunction with our presentations, we will have the Seoul Chapter 2023 elections. Voting will be in person, managed by our Elections Officer. Current KOTESOL members affiliated with the Seoul chapter may place their vote.
Teaching English in Multi-Level Classes: The Power of Self-Regulation and Language Cards
In the diverse landscape of English language classrooms, teachers often encounter multi-level classes, where students' abilities range widely. Navigating this complex environment necessitates approaches that move beyond traditional teaching methods. This presentation delves into the pivotal role of student self-regulation in such settings. We'll explore how self-regulation not only equips students with autonomy and resilience but also bridges the inherent gaps of multi-level classes, where a teacher's attention cannot equally cater to every individual's needs. Recognizing these challenges, the presentation introduces an innovative tool: language cards. These cards not only foster self-regulation but also provide a flexible resource adaptable to each student's pace and level. Through this multi-pronged approach, educators can empower students to take ownership of their learning journey, maximizing outcomes in the rich tapestry of multi-level classrooms.
Duane Henning is a Professor in the University College of Yonsei University, Seoul. He completed his undergraduate studies in English Literature, earning a Doctor of Education from the University of Exeter. Duane has been teaching English in South Korea at the university level for over 20 years. He was also involved with creating educational supplements for Oxford University Press. He has earned multiple teaching awards, and his interests span from educational technology, to fostering motivation, to complex systems in multiple language acquisition.
Building Connections for Better Instruction: Strategies to Enhance Learning
As an educator committed to delivering high-quality instruction, it is natural to become engrossed in one's own pedagogy and actions in the classroom. Sometimes, the improvements we seek can come from connecting with those around us, whether it be students, colleagues, or whoever else we may encounter. This workshop is designed to encourage participants to recognize and nurture these connections with others in order to enrich the lives both within and beyond the classroom. These connections improve both teacher performances and student outcomes. Through individual and shared explorations of the experiences and interests of those around us, participants will equip themselves with strategies to enhance relationships and create positive learning environments.
Melvin Dixon moved to South Korea in 2006. He learned some of the lessons for his presentation from the muddy tidal flats of Korea's west coast. He currently works at Gyeonggi University of Science and Technology, where he teaches and works in the Global Education Center, preparing students for work and study abroad. Melvin is acting vice president of the Seoul KOTESOL chapter in 2023 and a contributor to KOTESOL Voices.
