Roleplaying for the Classroom

Roleplay can be much more than setting up a shop and selling things to customers. Most of us have roleplayed during our childhood. What role plays did you play? What was the purpose of roleplay in your youth? So how do we bring it to the ESL classroom? Why should we? What is the difference between drama and roleplay? Learn how to teach students how to participate in simple roleplays and go from there to whatever your class needs.
This presentation will be part lecture but mostly workshop with the participants roleplaying to practice English in different ways and then gathering ideas on how to make more roleplays for their classroom needs. Most teachers will discover that students will start by following their teacher's instructions, but then the role play can and often does take on a life of its own. If the students don't have the vocabulary they will ask the teacher, so they can communicate their ideas and keep the adventure going. A little Korean is allowed. Teachers will be surprised how many words their students really know and how exciting English can be! This is for young learners but also can be for low-level older students (even university students) who lack confidence, or just to bring fun to any classroom.
The Presenter
Ingrid Zwaal, MSEd, has been teaching in Korea forever. She currently works at Jeonju University after seventeen years at two other universities. For sixteen years she had been teacher training for elementary teachers. She had the pleasure of training the English tour guides at Hanok Village for a few years. She has a rescue dog; Adam, a Westie; and Boris, a Scottie. Two birds and two fish complete her zoo. Ingrid plays competitive volleyball with a university student team. She writes a weekly column in English for a local newspaper, and she has an extensive puppet collection.

What Color Is Your Personality - And Other Ideas That Work!

You already have a textbook for your class, but it's getting boring...
You don't know how to spice it up...
You want to get your students out of their seats and interacting with each other...
Here are eight activities that will get your students talking, such as when they debate whether liking the color red makes them aggressive. The activities are a break from the book, and they are ready for you to take into your classroom on Monday morning. Some can be used as ice-breakers, or as a way to move students into new groups. Others can be used for longer group work.
I have used these activities with middle school students, with university students, as well as with in-service teachers. They can be adapted to match students of almost any age or ability level. The students have fun with them, and so do I.
Be prepared to participate in partner and group work in this workshop.

The Presenter
Allison Bill started her own second language learning at the age of 5. She completed her BEd in Elementary French Education at the University of Ottawa, and her MA TESL/TEFL at St. Michael’s College in Vermont. She is currently in the dissertation stage of an EdD at Anaheim University. Allison has taught FSL in Canada, and EFL in France and South Korea. She is a native of Ottawa, Canada.
