How Korean Learners Engage in Informal Digital Learning of English

Ju Seong (John) Lee

The reform movement in foreign language education, most recently expedited by technological advancement and its growing affordances, calls for a new approach to instruction (e.g., facilitating informal digital learning) that is a significant departure from widely accepted pedagogy (e.g., formal instruction).

In this session, attendees will see how Korean university students today use technology for informal English learning as well as how they perceive the language professors’ role in promoting informal digital learning of English. Specifically, I will first show preliminary findings from data collected through surveys (N=320) and interviews (N=100) from three Korean universities between September and December 2016. Next, we will discuss its pedagogical implications.

This session may help English instructors to better adopt appropriate types of technology, which will act to successfully prepare students for English learning in the changing era of language learning.

The Presenter
Ju Seong (John) Lee is a PhD candidate at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). His research interests include computer-assisted language learning (CALL) -- particularly, videoconferencing and informal digital learning of English, English as an International Language (EIL), and teacher preparation/development. He is the best-paper winner of the 6th Annual UIUC College of Education Graduate Student Conference in the USA (2015) and of the 3rd English Scholars Beyond Borders Conference in Taiwan (2016).

The Past Year, the Coming Year, Professional Development, and You

Dr. David Shaffer

As teachers of EFL, professional development is something that we all strive for. However, we may be unknowingly limiting our professional development (PD) to a few areas when additional opportunities are available. For example, one may place priority on going to PD events to discover new activities to use in their classes, while another may see the greater value of obtaining materials development skills so that they can create their own teaching materials designed particularly for their teaching context.

In this session, we will first discuss the five areas in which PD opportunities can be categorized (a) you, (b) your and your students, (c) you and your colleagues, (d) you and your school, and (e) you and your profession. Next, in small groups, we will discuss our most rewarding PD experiences during the past year, and we will round out the session by creating our own personal lists of New Year's PD resolutions for us to pursue in 2017.

To enhance the value of this session, it is suggested that you take a few minutes in advance to reflect on the professional development activities you have engaged in over the past year, assess how greatly (or how little) they have benefitted you, and consider what areas of PD require particular focus moving forward.

The Presenter
David E. Shaffer has been a KOTESOL member since the beginnings of the Jeolla Chapter in 1993. He has been a professor of English at Chosun University throughout his career in TESOL/Applied Linguistics. He holds a doctorate in Linguistics and advanced certificates in TESOL. At Gwangju-Jeonnam Chapter, Dr. Shaffer has served as Chapter President (2009-16), and at the National level, he has served as National Treasurer (2001-09), in various committee chair positions, and in various editor positions of KOTESOL publications. He is presently Publications Committee Chair and 1st Vice-President. Dr. Shaffer has received  multiple KOTESOL President's Awards for service and is a recipient of the Republic of Korea Order of Merit (Service).
