Diverse Knowledge in Action: Using Infographics to Teach Process Analysis

Tamara Roose (California State University, San Bernardino, USA)

Abstract

Infographics are visual representations of information that communicate ideas in a clear, simple way (Lankow et al., 2012; Smicklas, 2012). This can enhance language learners’ communication, comprehension, and motivation (Bicen & Beheshti, 2022; Rezaei & Sayadian, 2015). In this workshop, we'll focus on creating process analysis infographics to explain how something is done by drawing upon students’ diverse funds of knowledge from their lives outside of school (González et al., 2005). Learners consider how to explain their chosen skill and write all steps in order. Then they create infographics by hand or digitally to illustrate the process. Cue cards with different common daily tasks written and/or displayed as images and sentence starters can simplify this lesson. Conversely, it can be extended to include common mistakes, including cautions and tips. Ultimately, this multimodal lesson is versatile and positions students as experts who can draw upon life experiences to acquire new literacy skills.
