Our Presentation/Workshop Feature:
Using Commercial-Off-The-Shelf Games in EFL classrooms
Nicole Shiosaki Andrew Aguiar
Utilizing video games for teaching purposes has long been a point of interest for English as a foreign language (EFL) instructors. However, different games bring different features that must first be evaluated and considered pedagogically before entering the classroom. This presentation focuses on how a commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) video game called "Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes" was utilized to provide EFL students with opportunities to practice producing language in a meaningful way. This was accomplished through the principles of communicative language teaching and task-based language learning. The presenters explain their thought process for how to integrate COTS video games, using Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes as their example, by examining game features, considering pedagogical qualities and choosing a specific role for a video game in the classroom. Through this method, the presenters hope that other instructors will also consider how and when video games and other digital applications can be used in the modern classroom.
