Abstracts:

Topic: “Simplifying Literature Circles”

Literature Circles are student-led book discussions that take place in the classroom and support language learning. Although Literature Circles are a highly beneficial reading activity, they can be difficult to implement in Korean classrooms. Therefore, this workshop will provide instruction on how to simplify Literature Circles by incorporating graphic organizers. The workshop will also demonstrate how Literature Circles can be adapted for elementary and secondary textbooks, and for fiction and non-fiction texts. Participants will be given an opportunity to modify Literature Circles to ensure that all students can participate, despite their various English skills and reading levels.

Topic: “Classroom Successes and Failures – Conversational ‘Speed Dating’

Workshop attendees are asked to come ready to share brief anecdotes of their recent classroom successes and failures.  Participants will be arranged in a circle, one-on-one with a conversational partner, and have five minutes to go over anything of interest in their classrooms with each other.  Once time is up, participants will change partners and begin the process of sharing again.  It is the hope of the workshop organizers that through these brief, focused conversations, teachers will gain insight into what others are doing in their classrooms and pick up some helpful tips.
