The Suwon-Gyeonggi KOTESOL chapter’s May workshop will be held on Zoom and features one speaker, Heidi Vande Voort Nam, presenting “Upgrading Instructions.” Workshop attendees are asked to keep their cameras on and a microphone ready so as to facilitate a lively workshop.

Abstract:
“Upgrading Instructions”
This back-to-basics online workshop will focus on two techniques to set students up for successful pair and groupwork. The first technique is instruction check questions (ICQs). We’ll look at several different questioning strategies and discuss how to use them to troubleshoot activities in advance. The second technique is modeling and rehearsing student classroom English - not just the target language for the lesson, but the routine language that students need to make groups, assign roles, take turns, and give feedback. Participants in the workshop will be invited to discuss how to apply these two techniques in lessons for different age levels.
Speaker Bio:
Heidi Vande Voort Nam (MA TEFL/TESL) teaches general English and teacher-training courses for pre-service teachers at Chongshin University in Seoul. She has contributed as a writer to Korean elementary, middle, and high school English textbooks. Within KOTESOL, Heidi is a co-facilitator of the Christian Teachers SIG and a presenter for KOTESOL Teacher Training (KTT).
