A. Research presentation (3:00pm-3:30pm):

Post and Shout-out Loud: An Examination of Selfdisclosure Behavior on Facebook

Abstract
In a world where cyber communication is the prevalent medium for individuals to socially interconnect with each other, the use of social networking sites (SNS) has become massively popular among people from across cultures. Alongside with it, these sites have become a platform for individuals to express their beliefs and judgments in different contexts (e.g., personal, political, spiritual and the like). The purpose of the study was to examine the self-disclosure behavior of young people through careful evaluation and analyses of their shout-out posts on the social networking site, Facebook. Their goals for posting such shout-outs were also investigated. The participants comprised 12 young professionals and college students who are avid Facebook users. Utilizing the inductive method of content analysis, the results showed that the respondents were predisposed to posting shout-out statements that contained general information as a subject matter. Moreover, their posts contained more breadth rather than depth of disclosure. Several key properties of the depth dimension of personality were also identified and further explored. All things considered, the study found that participants’ shout-out posts were a demonstration of self-expression rather than self-disclosure. Furthermore, analyses on the profile of respondents were made and common trends from the themes of the shout-outs were also identified. 

 

Biography

Uzzel Ratilla is an assistant professor of the International College at the University of Suwon, South Korea. In the Philippines, she taught Psychology and ESL courses at two universities for 12 years. She finished both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Psychology at the University of San Carlos in Cebu City, Philippines. She is also a volunteer facilitator for Bidlisiw Foundation, Incorporated, a non-government organization that caters to disadvantaged children and their families belonging to poor communities. Her academic interests include community psychology and cyberpsychology and social networking.

 

B. Workshop (3:40pm-5:00pm): 

Identifying and Overcoming Barriers to Utilizing Technology Inside and Outside of the Classroom

Abstract

Having entered the 21st century the educational field is striving to integrate increasing amounts of technology both inside the classroom and out. As educators, this raises interesting questions about the ways in which we incorporate technology, both to its purpose and the practicalities involved. The workshop will focus on group discussions facilitated by the workshop lead to raise these questions and in turn to try to address some of them as a collective. The workshop aims to empower educators to feel more comfortable with bringing technology into their practice and to show ways in which this can be done at all levels. The workshop will be highly interactive, with group discussions and feedback to the main group as a whole. There will be a Powerpoint to direct the discussions and handouts provided for notetaking. At the end of the session there will be an opportunity for questions and answers with the workshop lead. Attendees may find it beneficial to bring a device (cell phone, tablet, laptop etc.) that can connect to the internet.

 

Biography

Elizabeth May is a Visiting Professor at Kongju National University (Cheonan Campus), where she is part of the Institute of International Language Education team. Previously she has taught in a variety of settings covering all age groups in both public and private institutions in South Korea and Thailand. She has been awarded her MEd (Applied Linguistics) and is currently working towards a MA (Education), completing a project focused on technological leadership in educational institutions. Previously Elizabeth has presented at the KoTESOL International Conference 2015 on the subject of implementing online learner management systems. Elizabeth also currently serves as the Vice President for the Seoul KoTESOL chapter. Elizabeth can be contacted at elizabethjmay@yahoo.co.uk
