Welcome to our April workshops, where we move into the enriching realms of poetry and meditation, intricately woven into the tapestry of English Language Teaching (ELT) and English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning. As we embark on this journey of exploration, discovery, and self-reflection, we are privileged to be guided by a remarkable individual who brings their expertise to illuminate our path.
First, we have the honor of being introduced to the captivating world of poetry by a distinguished poet-scholar Dr YeonSung Park. Poetry, with its intricate wordplay, nuanced expressions, and profound imagery, serves as a conduit for language learners to delve deeper into the nuances of the English language. Through the lens of poetry, learners not only enhance their linguistic proficiency but also cultivate a deeper appreciation for cultural nuances, creative expression, and emotional intelligence. Dr. Park's insights will undoubtedly inspire us to harness the power of poetry as a transformative tool within the ELT and EFL classroom, fostering linguistic fluency, cultural understanding, and personal growth.
Additionally, we are privileged to partake in a meditative journey through the serene beauty of the Gwangju National University campus's natural landscapes. Self-led discovery walks around campus will be followed up with a discussion on meditation and mindfulness. This meditative walk offers a unique opportunity for educators and learners alike to cultivate inner peace, clarity of mind, and heightened awareness – essential qualities that resonate deeply within the realm of language learning. By integrating mindfulness practices into the ELT and EFL pedagogy, we not only nurture a conducive learning environment but also empower learners to harness their cognitive abilities, regulate emotions, and foster deeper connections with language and culture.
In essence, our April workshops offer a holistic approach to language teaching and learning, integrating the artistry of poetry and the mindfulness of meditation into the fabric of ELT and EFL education. By engaging with these transformative practices, we aspire to not only enhance linguistic proficiency but also nurture the holistic development of learners, fostering empathy, creativity, and a profound sense of connection with the English language and the world at large.
Together, let us embark on this enriching journey of exploration, reflection, and growth, as we unlock the boundless potential of poetry, meditation, and language learning.
Workshop 1
Title: Reading Joseph Brodsky
Abstract: As April is the month of poetry, we will take the opportunity to read the poems of a renowned poet, Joseph Brodsky (1940 ~ 1996), a Russian-born American poet who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1987. Brodsky's early poetry primarily dealt with personal emotions such as love, suffering, death, and separation. Writing about personal theme was regarded as a challenge to the socialist realism of Soviet Union. He was arrested for "parasitism" at the age of 23 and was sentenced to five years of forced labor in the northern regions of Russia. In 1972 he was permanently expelled from the country. Brodsky esteemed the values of freedom and individualism, and for him literary art was the value that he was willing to exchange his life for it. Our reading will focus on “A Song,” "Autumn Evening," "Robinsonade," and “Daedalus in Sicily.” Brodsky also had an extraordinary affection for Venice, Italy. Therefore we will read a part of his essay collection, "Watermark," which revolves around Venice. Through this session I hope we can learn how exiled poet, Brodsky discovers his place in America and flourishes within the literary world.
Bio: Yeon-seong Park is currently a researcher of English literature. Formerly she has taught ELT courses and English poetry at Chonnam National University for twenty years. She is a lifetime member of KOTESOL and has served as president of Gwangju-Jeonnam Chapter (2006-2007). She has co-authored W. H. Auden (2005) and published Creative English Practice (2009) and dozens of articles both on ELT and on modern British/American poets.
Workshop 2
Title: Nature to Sooth the EFL Soul
Abstract: As Spring unfolds its vibrant tapestry in the outdoor spaces around us, it presents a timely opportunity for educators to contemplate our continual growth and renewal as teachers. Amidst the budding blooms and rejuvenating landscapes, we are invited to reexamine our teaching practices and to inspire Korean learners to perceive their English language studies through a lens of novelty and freshness. In this session, we will explore a transformative avenue for revitalizing our pedagogical approach: embracing the meditative benefits inherent in our natural surroundings. Recognizing the looming threat of attention fatigue on our cognitive and mental well-being, we turn to the concept of "soft fascination" elucidated by Daniel (2014). Soft fascination occurs when our attention is captivated by a less active or stimulating activity, affording us the space for reflection and introspection. Together, we will embark on a brief outdoor walk, allowing ourselves to immerse in the gentle allure of nature's tranquility. As we navigate through serene paths, we will cultivate a mindful presence, attuning our senses to the whispers of the natural world. Following our meditative excursion, we will reconvene for a thoughtful discussion on the integration of meditation and mindfulness practices within the EFL classroom.
