Classrooms Are Complex (Even During COVID!): Strategies for Embracing Complexity
A question for you: whether you’re teaching in person or online, do you think of the classrooms or virtual spaces in which you teach as “complex”? In what ways? If we asked this question of others such as learners, administrators, or edtech designers, would they have the same answers? Perhaps you feel that, during the pandemic, some of the complexity of your teaching spaces has been denied or stifled. In this session, we will (lightly!) explore some of the understandings on offer from complex dynamic systems theory and then discuss several strategies for teaching, planning, and classroom management that embrace the complex properties of learning spaces and allow for authentic learning to emerge. These strategies can be useful for both in-person and online teaching and might be helpful in responding to and working around some of the limitations imposed during the pandemic.
