"Extensive Listening through a Personal Goals Project"

The Presentation
This presentation is about how to have EFL learners do extensive listening outside the classroom and how to incorporate it into course grades. This project is an adaptation and refinement of earlier personal goal projects to create a project suitable for the presenter’s listening and speaking classes as a way of doing extensive listening. She is going to share step-by-step instructions for setting up a personal goals project.

3:00 Room 101
"A Selection of Warmers and Warm Downs"

The Presentation
Learning English is much like physical activity in that a warm up before starting the lesson will get your learners ready for the mental exertions ahead. Likewise, a warm down at the end of class will help learners consolidate what they have learnt during the class. This workshop will provide teachers with a selection of tried and tested warmers and warm downs on a variety of topics and for a variety of levels.

The Presenter
Tim Dalby
holds an M.A. (with distinction) in English Language Teaching from The University of Reading in the UK. Originally from Portsmouth, England, Tim has been teaching English since the summer of 2000. He has taught in Korea, New Zealand, and the Czech Republic in a variety of contexts and is an oral examiner for the Cambridge Business English examinations. 3:00 Room 114
"Classroom Activities For Young Learners and Teens"

The Presentation

Most of the presentation, however, will be devoted to demonstrating numerous effective games that the presenter has developed and used in the middle school classroom and with young learners.

The Presenter
Viva May Cabreros
has taught at the middle-school level for numerous years, most recently at Gwangju Sahmyook Middle School. She received her university degree in Education in the Philippines. Viva May is the Membership Coordinator for Gwangju-Jeonnam Chapter of KOTESOL.

4:00 Room 101
"On-Line and Mobile "Flash Cards" with Quizlet"

The Presentation
Flash cards have been a standard teaching tool for decades.  Quizlet.com is an easy-to-use, free website which moved the flashcard idea into the 21st century. Quizlet.com allows teachers and students to create, share and study vocabulary flashcards online or via mobile applications. In this presentation, I’ll share how I've used Quizlet.com with my first-year writing students. You will go home with another resource to enhance student study and autonomy. Quizlet.com is most suitable for independent study by students from middle school to adult, but could be used in classroom and supervised lab settings by younger learners.

4:00 Room 114
"Easy Integration of Video and Other Media into Grammar- and Function-Focused Lessons"

The Presentation
Using authentic video and other media in class can be an effective way to increase student engagement, add dynamic visual elements, and introduce authentic and culturally appropriate language use. It’s relatively easy to find speaking activities based on videos; yet these activities often take a lot of time, and teachers using a grammar- or function-focused textbook might have difficulty figuring out exactly how to incorporate such activities into their lessons. Some of these activities can be adapted if the right video can be found; alternatively, videos can be used to simply and effectively set the context or elicit the target language, without the use of additional activities. This talk will introduce a variety of videos that can be used to elicit, model, or practice a variety of language structures. It will touch on ways these videos can be used in grammar- and function-focused classes, and it will highlight useful online video resources and tools.
