KOTESOL Gwangju–Jeonnam Chapter: May Gathering Invitation
May 30 | 2:00 PM | Jeonil Building, Gwangju

As May unfolds, Gwangju offers a powerful convergence of history, pedagogy, and community engagement. We invite you to join us for a reflective and place-based gathering that connects these threads.

On Friday, May 30 at 2:00 PM, we will meet in the lobby of the Jeonil Building in downtown Gwangju. Together, we will visit the May 18th Memorial Museum housed within the building—a site that invites us to engage more deeply with the historical and ongoing significance of the Gwangju Uprising. This visit offers an opportunity to consider how themes of democracy, human rights, and civic resistance might inform our teaching and curriculum.

Following the museum visit, we will gather at the building’s café, where we can continue our conversation over coffee while taking in panoramic views of downtown Gwangju and the surrounding landscape, including Mudeunsan. This informal time is intended for dialogue, reflection, and community building.

This gathering comes at the end of a month rich with events that resonate with our work as educators:

May 13–15: The World Human Rights Cities Forum at the Kim Dae-jung Convention Center (free and open to the public), offering timely perspectives on global and local human rights issues and their relevance to education.
May 16–17: The KOTESOL International Conference, with special appreciation for the Gwangju members supporting onsite registration and conference coordination.
May 23: Gwangju Community Day, hosted by the Gwangju International Center, celebrating the city’s diversity through food, culture, and community connection.

We see these events not as separate occasions, but as interconnected opportunities to enrich our teaching, deepen our awareness, and strengthen our professional and local communities.

We hope you will join us on May 30 for this meaningful closing to a vibrant month.
