Motivating students after a long vacation break:  First day / first week activities:  After a long vacation break, regardless of whether they are elementary, middle school, high school or university students, getting students back into the swing of things can be challenging after a long vacation break. Motivation in the ESL/EFL classroom is an important factor on the first day back from vacation. Students may have low motivation to learn English. In addition to that, while most of them have a vague sense that whether "English will be useful for my future" or not, they don't have a clear idea of what that means, nor is that a very strong motivator; it's too vague and too far off.

On the first week back from vacation, teachers get ready to greet their students, anxious to get started, and our young, or not-so-young, learners are nervous, wondering what their teachers’ are like. Of course, first impressions count, and it’s essential to have a first day of class that will set the tone for what the rest of the school year or course will be like!

In this workshop, we will share our first day / first week activities with each other to help motivate students and get them back into the swing of things after a long vacation break.

Directions

From Banwoldang Subway Station, walk through the underground and take the escalator to the left in front of Hyundai Department Store (HDS), exit 18.   Do not enter HDS.

Walk across the front of HDS and turn right.  Head to the front corner of Sh Bank, behind HDS.   Daegu Oriental Medicine Street is there; turn left.  The Ecology Oriental Wellness Experience Center is directly across the street from the First Presbyterian Church of Daegu and the Oriental Medicine Museum.

Go down the flat stone sidewalk to the back of the building.  Then walk up the outdoor steps to the second floor conference room.  There is a Da Hyang coffee/tea shop on the first floor.
