Abstract: Why use Portfolios in EFL classrooms? (Dieter Knowle)

In a recent report, the National Commission on Writing said, “if students are to make knowledge their own, they must struggle with the details, wrestle with the facts, and rework raw information and dimly understood concepts into language they can communicate to someone else.  In short, if students are to learn, they must write” (foreword by Vartan Gregorian, President of the Carnegie Corporation of New York). Students who write develop insight, explore thoughts and feelings, develop intellectual courage, reason logically, follow the thread of the lesson in their minds, and visualize a concept and then make it more concrete by writing down their thoughts about it. Portfolios have been widely used for many years. In the late 80s, interest in portfolios was for assessment, and the 90s saw the advent of e-portfolios . In recent years, there has been a shift in emphasis away from assessment to learning. This talk provides an overview of portfolios and their use in a Freshman English Program in Korea.

Dr. Knowle has taught in Korea for eleven years. He was an adjunct professor at Soongsil University in Seoul and currently is a member of the Faculty of Liberal Education, Kyungpook National University teaching credit and non-credit English courses. His interests include engagement theory as well as CALL, MALL (both mobile and multimedia), and gamification in the ESL classroom. Dr. Knowle has taught a variety of writing courses covering diverse areas such as academic, manuscript and grant writing.
