May Workshop:  Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) by Ted Mishler

Ted Mishler Bio

Ted Mishler is currently an associate professor at Yeungnam University in Gyeongsan, where he has taught since 2009. Ted began teaching English in 1997, when he was in Dresden, Germany. After that, he taught at a university in Budapest, Hungary before finally arriving in Korea in July of 2000.  He taught for 3 years in hagwons located in Seoul and Daegu, and 6 years at Hanseo University on the west coast in Seosan.

Workshop: Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS)

VTS is a method developed by Abigail Housen, a cognitive psychologist, and Philip Yenawine, an art educator. Originally, this method was created as a tool to foster aesthetic development and to assist empathic understanding of others' experience of the visual world through visual art. According to Housen, VTS uses art to assist students in developing critical thinking, communication and observation skills, and participation in the

group thought processes. VTS helps build several skills including forming a cohesive team idea about art, team building, listening, and analytical thinking. For us teachers of English, it strengthens language and listening skills, including the willingness and ability to express oneself, respect for the views of others and the ability to consider and debate possibilities. Also, classroom discussions that center on art enable all students, regardless of language skill, to participate in a process of critical thinking about complex objects.
