1. Coding and conversation: A case study of a content and language integrated learning approach to teaching EFL (Mike Kealey)

Content and language integrated learning (CLIL) is an immersive approach to language learning through the teaching of subject matter at the same time as language. In this workshop, the presenter will discuss the fundamental principles of CLIL as well as the opportunities and challenges of teaching an EFL-Web programming course at Yonsei University. This presentation is aimed at EFL teachers and will be of particular interest to those who want to include content in their language classes.

2. Introduction to Communicative Pronunciation Teaching (Crystal Hecht)

“Hmm…that’s not quite it. Listen and repeat after me. Okay, good. One more time. Better. Let’s move on.”

Is this the extent of pronunciation instruction in your classroom? Don’t feel so bad, you’re not the only one. With all the pressure on teachers to teach for immediate results measurable by written exams, explicit pronunciation instruction is still often scarce to non-existent in the classroom. Moreover, many teachers do not have enough training to feel confident introducing supplementary pronunciation lessons into their schools’ curriculum. This introductory workshop will introduce the major concepts of English pronunciation, basic concepts of Korean pronunciation to help you better understand the challenges your students face, and the basics of incorporating communicative pronunciation practice into your classroom. Other points to be touched upon include motivation, evaluation, and textbook analysis. Attendees are encouraged to bring their smartphones fully charged and the current textbook they are using. While this workshop will focus on teaching young adults through adults, elementary teachers will find many parts of this workshop beneficial.
