Abstract:

We've all had them--shy language learners who seem afraid of the very sound of their own voices. In this workshop, we will consider some ways of meeting the challenges we face as language teachers in encouraging shy learners to become more active in class. Specifically, we will examine seven principles drawn from education and applied linguistics literature that help to create a language learning environment which can enable even the most timid of language learners to take more risks in their language learning and open up in class. These principles are safety, a sound relationship, team work, immediacy, sequence and reinforcement, intrinsic motivation, and interlanguage.
