Welcome spring and a brand new semester! Our start this semester was a little delayed but now we are rolling! We are excited to welcome two great presenters, Andrew Griffiths and Amy Lee. Andrew is going to present on how to use boards more effectively. Amy will guide us on using realia in the classroom.

If you are interested in hearing these speakers, please come to Jeonju University, Star Center above the convention center on April 7. The workshop starts at 2:45pm. All you need to bring is your enthusiasm. There are more details about the presentations below.

How to Use Your Boards More Effectively

By Andrew Griffiths

Every classroom comes equipped with a whiteboard or blackboard, but few teachers receive training on how to use these effectively. However the board, like the teacher’s voice or body language, is a critical tool for communicating content. As such, if a teacher’s board work is inadequate there is a high possibility that the students’ learning could be affected. Therefore, it is our responsibility to use the board as effectively as we possibly can.

This workshop will showcase several practical techniques that can be used to produce outstanding board work. During the workshop attendees will work in groups to make their own board work following these techniques, and will be offered advice and help by the workshop facilitator throughout. Finally all participants will have the chance to reflect on how effective board work can enhance the student learning experience.

This workshop will be suitable for those teaching any age group, but will be especially useful to those who are novice teachers or to those who lack experience using their board. No artistic talent is required, but attendee participation will be essential.

Andrew Griffiths is a teacher training instructor for the Daejeon Education Training Institute. He has been teaching for almost ten years and specializes in teaching effective methods of delivering classroom English. He can be contacted at dcc.kotesol.membership@gmail.com.

Utilizing Realia in the Classroom

By Amy Lee

Have you ever come across a brochure or poster and wanted to incorporate them into your EFL lessons but not quite sure how? In this workshop, tips on how to procure realia while teaching in a foreign country will be discussed. Realia are objects from real life which are used in the classroom to teach about the concept and create a better understanding for students.

In the first part of the workshop, the presenter will introduce some realia she has gathered throughout various locations from her travels in Korea and how she has utilized them in her classroom. For the second half of the workshop, everyone is encouraged to share their experiences
of using realia in their own classroom, as well as create activities with examples provided by the presenter. Attendees will also brainstorm together on finding other realia from their own settings and discuss how those could be adapted for classroom use.
