2019 International Conference Registration FAQ

I can’t remember my KOTESOL account user name and/or password.

Enter your email address (the one you used to open the account) as the user name, then click "Request new password." You will receive an email with your user name and a temporary password, which can be changed after you successfully log in (My Account --> Edit). Step-by-step instructions can also be found here.

When does my membership expire?

You can find your KOTESOL membership information on your online account profile page: koreatesol.org/user. One-year KOTESOL memberships purchased at last year's International Conference expire on September 30, 2019. Member discounts for the 2019 International Conference are based on a membership expiration date of October 31, 2019, or later. You can find more information about membership expiration dates here.

Can I pay with a credit card?

Korea TESOL is unable to accept credit cards or PayPal. If you choose to register at the conference venue instead of online, please bring cash.

Why no credit cards?

While credit card processing by for-profit businesses in South Korea is supported and even encouraged by the government, the banking laws, tax structures, and reporting systems here make the use of credit cards in nonprofit associations difficult and expensive. Accordingly, almost no academic society in Korea does so. The same is true for electronic payment systems such as PayPal and KakaoPay. In addition, off-shore banking and use of personal accounts in lieu of registered organization bank accounts create significant legal liability for both the association and the individuals involved.

Currently, bank transfer is the best way to send us money. International members have also had success with TransferWise, an online banking service that charges reasonable fees for international monetary transfers. If you choose to use TransferWise, you may add KOTESOL as a business recipient and transfer money to our U.S. dollar account (exchange rate: 1,000 KRW = 1 USD). We continue to look for alternate ways to facilitate international payments; but for the foreseeable future, these two options are the only types of payment we can accept. (Please feel free to transfer payments from multiple people at once, in bulk! Just email us to let us know what the payment is for, and for whom.) Thank you for your understanding and patience!

Did you get my payment?

Probably. We try to send out email confirmations within 7-10 business days of receiving payment, but due to the summer break and the high number of people pre-registering, this isn’t always possible. In addition, our confirmation emails are sometimes blocked by overzealous spam filters. The best way to confirm your registration (and/or print an invoice) is online at koreatesol.org: Log in → My account → Orders.

I’m a graduate student. Can I get a student discount?

No. Student discounts are only available for undergraduate students who are currently studying.

I can't see the fields on the registration form; they're all black! How can I register?

This is a known problem with Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 8 web browser. Very rarely the problem can also be caused by a bad web browser plug-in or a screen-reading virus that is looking for private information.

To avoid this dark overlay, please try using a newer version of Internet Explorer (IE9 and up) or another browser, such as Firefox or Chrome.

How can I get my conference pass?

You can pick up your conference pass in the pre-registration area at the conference. It will be filed under your family (last) name.

   Saturday: 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
   Sunday: 8 a.m.-1 p.m.

* Note: Conference passes will not be available after 1 p.m. on Sunday.

I’m a group leader. Can I pick up all the passes for my group members?

Based on past experience and feedback from group leaders in prior years, we do not recommend doing this; but yes, it's possible. Group leaders can pick up passes for all group members, if they notify us in advance that they'd like to do so. Please indicate in the comments field of the registration form that you’d like to do this, or send us an email ASAP. We’ll pull out your group passes and have them waiting for you.

NOTE: If you choose to do this, please remember to tell your group members they must get their passes from you, not at Registration!

NOTE: If you choose to do this, group leaders ONLY may pick up the passes, or they can delegate someone and send us that person’s name. The person responsible for picking up the passes must show photo ID to do so.

I am a KOTESOL member. Can I still register as part of a group?

Yes, but if you do so you must pay the group price (65,000 won per person).

I need an official receipt to give to my institution. How can I get one?

Printable invoices are available online (My account → Orders). Hard copies of receipts will also be available at the conference. Please inquire at Registration.

I need a letter of invitation so I can get a visa to attend the conference!

Sorry; KOTESOL does not issue letters of invitation to conference attendees.

Please note that KOTESOL membership dues and registration fees are non-refundable; we suggest that you check visa requirements with the Korean consulate in your country before proceeding.

I bought my membership at the conference last year. Can I get a discount as a member this year?

Sorry; to qualify for a discount as a KOTESOL member, your membership must expire on or after October 31, 2019. If you purchased your membership at the conference last year, your membership expires before this date. Please consider renewing your membership today! (You can renew your membership as part of your conference registration, if you wish.)

I can’t go to the conference, but I pre-registered. Can I get a refund?

Sorry, refunds are not possible. You may give your pass to someone else, though; please see below.

I can’t go to the conference, but I pre-registered. Can I give my conference pass to a friend?

Yes, you can do this. Just send us the new pass-holder's full name as soon as possible. If you let us know the new pass-holder’s name before pre-registration closes, we’ll change your name to that name. If you send us the new name after pre-registration closes, he/she can pick up your pass in the pre-registration area at the conference. It will be under your name. The new pass-holder should bring his/her ID to prove he/she is the person you have approved.

I need some information for my international money transfer....

All of the information you'll need (our bank address, bank account numbers, KOTESOL's registered address, etc.) is available on the first page of the registration form. Please log in and check there first! If you need some information that doesn't appear on the conference registration page, please contact us.
