Workshop Title: A Framework for Explaining Activities and Games to Learners with Limited English

Abstract:

Games and Activities are a major part of many teachers’ English classrooms. However, explaining these games and activities is not always easy, especially to learners who have a limited English ability such as young learners. This can lead to overlong or misunderstood explanations which can result in boredom or even the failure of the activity or game.

This workshop aims to resolve this issue by presenting a simple framework with which a teacher can introduce any game or activity. The framework is the result of many years of trials and errors and so has the benefit of being proven in the classroom many times over with varied levels of learners. It is designed to be practical and easy for any teacher to begin using right away.

The workshop will begin with an introduction of the framework before the workshop attendees begin putting the framework into practice by working in groups to explain a game or activity. During this time, the facilitator will offer advice and expertise to the groups as they plan their explanation together. Finally, the groups will split up and each workshop participant will explain their group’s game to another participant from a different group in order to gain active experience in using the framework. As such, attendees should be willing to participate in the workshop actively in order to gain the most benefit from the experience.
