Some Hotel Options

Shinsikaji

In Shinshikaji, there are numerous cheap motels you can choose to stay at, but there are higher-quality options available as well.

Day Nice Hotel is in the heart of Shinshikaji, and usually caters to business travelers. (46 Hongsanbuk-ro).

Pop Hotel (74 Hongsanbuk-ro) and J Mate Hotel (60-12 Hongsanbuk-ro) are also in the center of Shinshikaji and are serviceable hotels for a cheaper cost.

Hotel Le Win

Hotel Le Win is offering a special discount of 100,000 per night for KOTESOL members. It rises above Hanok Village for a wonderful view. http://hotellewin.com/eng/ 63-232-7000. There are many high end hotels in this area.

Hanok Guesthouses

Jeonju is home to the largest Hanok Village in Korea. With over 800 Hanok houses, it's become Jeonju's largest tourist draw. If you want an "authentic" Korean experience, we highly recommend staying in one of the dozens of Hanok hotels available.

From Hanok Village it costs about 10,000 won one way by taxi to Jeonju University, but in Hanok Village there is the option of guesthouses. Many of these have Korean style mattresses on the floor. One is run by a former Jeonju North Jeolla KOTESOL vice president, Miso. She is offering a discount of 65,000 for small rooms and 90,000 for larger rooms (3-4 people) in her Jeonju Indigo Hanok Guesthouse. At the time of this writing there were six rooms left. All require sleeping on the floor but each room has its own bathroom. Call Miso at 010-6725-3337.

E-Hanok Stay

Other guesthouse options may be found at a booking site: ehanokstay@naver.com but only in Korean. 63-288-8828, 63-288-8827, 010-7656-8827.

Search Engines

Generally hotels are cheaper through search engines like Agoda, hotelscombined, Expedia or booking.com. We are not vetting any places to stay so you are on your own.

Grand Hillstone

Grand Hilston Hotel near Jeonju University is a higher-end hotel that goes for roughly 100,000-150,000 a night. (22-5 Seogok 5-gil). It's about a 5,000 won taxi ride to the university and about the same from the bus terminals.

It is advisable to book rooms ahead of time in Hanok Village or the larger hotels as they can fill up rather quickly.

Jeonju Tourism

Jeonju Hanok Village – the #3 destination in Asia, according to Lonely Planet.  Here are some of the places of interest from the tourism office in Jeonju. We have brochures and maps available at the conference.

Nightlife and Food

On the main road of Shinshikaji, there are plenty of options for nightlife and food. For foreigners, the most popular option is Mad Hungry (42 Hongsanjungang-ro, 6 th floor). It has pool, darts, beer, cocktails, and Western-style food. Other notable bars to check out in the area:

  • Public (39 Hongsanjungang-ro), a higher-end Korean-style pub with good pizza, as well as beer and cocktails.
  • Lord Movie (73 Hongsannam-ro, 6 th floor) is a bit of the main drag, but worth a visit. It’s a 6th floor bar with an open balcony in good weather, cool movie paraphernalia décor, and good cocktails.
  • Taphouse 40 (60-18 Hongsanbuk-ro), which has wristbands that you use to self-serve all the draft beer that you want, from dozens of different options.
  • Australopithecus (69-9 Hongsanbuk-ro), which has beer, coffee, bar food, and plenty of space.
  • Uncle Joe, which in the first floor of the Mad Hungry building, and serves cocktails.

The area is also littered with Korean barbecue restaurants and other Korean-style restaurants, as well as lamb restaurants and Vietnamese restaurants (such as Pho Ha Noi, in a building near Mad Hungry on the fourth floor). If you wander around the area, you will find plenty of food to suit your needs – or if you’d just like some Western food, Mad Hungry is always a good option.
