These Guidelines will help you do your best when you submit your proposal. It will explain:

PRESENTATION TITLE

(Please note: Titles which do not follow these guidelines may be penalized up to .5 points in the selection process.)

  • Titles should be no longer than 12 words
  • Do NOT use the term “101” in your presentation title.

 

 

PRESENTATION TYPES

(Please note: Proposals incorrectly classified may be penalized up to .5 points in the selection process.)

“101” WORKSHOPS
These workshops are designed specifically for new teachers. They:

  • Introduce the basic concepts of ELT which lie behind good classroom practices AND
  • Expose the attendees to real, useful classroom activities.
  • These workshops may run for either 45 or 80 minutes.

 

This year, we are soliciting proposals for “101” workshops on:

  • Classroom management “101”
  • Web-based resources for teachers “101”
  • “Conversation” classes “101”
  • Orientation to Communicative Language Learning and Teaching “101”

(Workshops on other topics should be submitted under “Demonstration/Workshop”.)

 

RESEARCH REPORT / PAPER

  • This is a report on original research, not previously presented.
  • Typically, this includes minimal discussion of classroom application.

 

WORKSHOP / DEMONSTRATION
These are to present an idea or technique for use in the classroom.

  • Workshops with active audience experience and participation are desired.
  • Attendees should develop skills, materials or knowledge they can use in their classroom settings.
  • Typically, a workshop may include a report of a research project, but involves minimal discussion of theoretical background or research results.

Workshops presented at the KOTESOL International Conference in 2014 or 2015 should NOT be submitted for this year’s conference.

 

COLLOQUIA AND PANELS
We welcome Colloquia and Panels on various topics. The colloquium or panel ORGANIZER should contact the Program Director at (Conference.Program@Koreatesol.org) for further details before submitting the online form.

Colloquia

  • Involve a series of related but separate presentations by different people.
  • The presentations may be given concurrently or sequentially.
  • Each presenter in the colloquium should submit an individual proposal.
  • When submitting the form, select “20 minutes” for presentation length and put a note in the “comments” section indicating which colloquium you are participating in.

 

Panels

  • Involve a moderator and three or more panelists talking about one topic or question relevant to ELT.
  • The panelists address the topic and respond to each other to develop and explore the topic.
  • Audience participation in the discussion is expected.
  • ONE form is submitted by the moderator, naming all panelists.

 

 

PRESENTATION LENGTH

At the KOTESOL International Conference, we have four TIME choices:

  • 20 Minutes (Research papers)
  • 45 Minutes (Workshops / Demonstrations) 
  • 80 Minutes (Workshops / Demonstrations)
  • 105 Minutes (Panels and Colloquia)

 

20-MINUTE PRESENTATIONS

  • These are for Research Reports and Papers.
  • A maximum of two presenters is allowed. (Other researchers / co-authors may be named in the abstract, handouts, extended summary and proceedings.)

 

45-MINUTE PRESENTATIONS 

  • Most Workshops and Demonstrations will be 45-minutes long.
  • Workshops which include active audience involvement and participation are desired.
  • A maximum of three presenters is allowed. (Other researchers or co-authors may be named in the abstract, handouts, extended summary and proceedings.)

 

80-MINUTE WORKSHOPS

  • This extended workshop is intended for presentations involving much more audience participation.
  • Typically, this means workshops to teach art, music or drama techniques, or computer applications.
  • A maximum of four presenters is allowed. (Other co-authors may be named in the abstract, handouts, extended summary and proceedings.)

 

105- MINUTE SESSIONS

  • The 2-hour session is for Colloquia and Panels only.

 

Note: A colloquium will run for 2 hours (105 minutes) HOWEVER, each speaker’s submission should indicate a 20-minute session. The colloquium organizer should contact the Program Director for more information at Conference.Program@Koreatesol.org.

 

 

THE CONFERENCE SCHEDULE

When scheduling presentations at the Conference, we think of the weekend in four time blocks:

  • Saturday A.M.
  • Saturday P.M.
  • Sunday A.M.
  • Sunday P.M.

 

As a courtesy, we allow presenters to opt out of ONE of the time blocks.

  • BEFORE you submit your form, please consider your travel and other personal requirements carefully.
  • If selected, we will expect you to be available to present at any of the other three time blocks.
  • We may not be able to honor these requests if you are involved in more than one presentation.

 

 

YOUR PROPOSAL TOPIC

(Please note: Proposals incorrectly classified may be penalized up to .5 points in the selection process.)

TOPICS fall, basically, into four groups:

  • “101” topics
  • Developing learners’ English skills
  • Developing teaching skills or knowledge
  • Other areas of interest or research

 

“101” TOPICS
This year, we are looking specifically for “101” topics on:

  • Classroom management “101”
  • Web resources for teachers “101”
  • Orientation to Communicative Language Teaching and Learning “101”
  • “Conversation” classes “101”

(If your presentation is on another topic, or is more advanced than “101-level,” submit under the “Demonstration / Workshop” category.)

 

DEVELOPING STUDENTS’ ENGLISH SKILLS
This includes presentations on:

  • Speaking / Conversation / Pronunciation
  • Listening
  • Reading / Literacy
  • Writing
  • Grammar
  • Vocabulary
  • Multiple skills

 

DEVELOPING TEACHING SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
This includes presentations about:

  • Developing learner creativity / 21st Century skills
  • Assessment / Testing
  • Materials or Course design
  • Learning preferences / styles
  • Classroom management
  • Content-based instruction
  • Technology-enhanced instruction / CALL / CMI / MALL

 

OTHER AREAS OF INTEREST
There are many other areas of interest to ELT. These include:

  • SLA
  • Pragmatics
  • English for Specific or Academic Purposes
  • Sociolinguistics / Language Policy / World Englishes
  • Identity (learner or teacher)
  • Reflective Teaching Practice
  • ELT and Cross-cultural / Intercultural communication issues
  • Other issues

 

 

YOUR INTENDED AUDIENCE

Consider which teachers might be most interested in your presentation. Teachers of:

  • Young or Very Young Learners
  • Teens or Middle/High School Students
  • University Students
  • Adult learners

 

 

YOUR RESEARCH BASE

(Please note: Proposals incorrectly classified may be penalized up to .5 points in the selection process.)

Research is not necessary for a good presentation, but many of the presentations at the International Conference are based on research. If you have done a research project and are reporting on it, or if research has influenced your project, please indicate the kind of research you did.

  • No research (The presentation is based on classroom experience.)
  • Action Research Project
  • Larger Research project

 

CLASSROOM EXPERIENCE (No research):
Not every presentation is based on research. Some presentations come out of the practical experience of classroom teachers.

  • Typically, these presentations focus on classroom activities or resources a teacher has developed and used.
  • These are great sessions for sharing and finding ideas for classes.

 

ACTION RESEARCH
Action Research has many forms. Typically,

  • Action Research is done by one teacher using her/his classes.
  • It is limited in scope and classroom-focused.
  • The results of the Action Research are used by the teacher to improve his/her classes.
  • Be sure to talk about your Action Research in your abstract (if applicable).
  • Action Research can also be done by a small group of teachers.

 

LARGER RESEARCH PROJECTS
Larger Research Projects typically involve many subjects and more time. They can involve several researchers. Larger Research Projects:

  • Have broad research questions and focus.
  • The results of Larger Research Projects can have classroom application, but often focus on other aspects of language learning.

Be sure to talk about your Research Project in your abstract (if applicable).

 

 

ABSTRACTS

(Please note: Abstracts longer than the limits may be penalized up to .5 points in the selection process.)

We are asking for two versions of your abstract: 125 words and 250 words.

THE LONGER ABSTRACT will be used by the vetters to rate your proposal.
The abstract should:

  • Include the theoretical assumptions from which you worked
  • Reflect the latest thought and best practices in ELT
  • Include a reasonable description of the activity to be discussed or demonstrated
  • If you classify your presentation as research-based, reference your research. Include the basic research design and questions. An outline of the research findings should be included (if available).

Be realistic and focused in the scope of your presentation. Remember, you have a time limit. Abstracts do not need bibliographical or reference notes.

THE SHORTER ABSTRACT will be put in the program book (if it is selected).
It is your chance to show-case your work to the conference attendees.

  • Include a reasonable description of the activity to be discussed or demonstrated.
  • Attendees should be able to tell if you will give them something new or repeat what they already know.
  • Be explicit. Your audience should not be surprised by your presentation; just better informed.

(The shorted abstract may be a version of the longer one.)

 

 

YOUR BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

(Please note: Biographical statements longer than 125 words may be penalized up to .5 points in the selection process.)

You will need a 125-word biographical statement about each presenter. This should be written in the third person. If your presentation is selected, this will be printed in the program book. You may include your contact information here, but remember: this will be printed and available online.

 

 

A STRONGER PROPOSAL

In vetting the proposals, we ask several questions, including:

  • Is the proposal clear? Do we have a good idea of what will happen?
  • Do we see the latest and best thoughts about ELT in the proposal?
  • Does the proposal show us something new, interesting or helpful?
  • If it is a workshop presentation, is it “hands-on” or more “show-and-tell”?
  • Do research questions and methodology look appropriate and well done (if applicable)?
  • Is the amount of material to be covered reasonable for the time requested?
  • Does the proposal fit the conference?

 

Your Proposal’s Classifications:
Be sure you list the various classifications and categories correctly. Each of them has an effect on the rating of your proposal.

 

Your Presentation’s Title
The title of your presentation should:

  • Accurately and effectively reflect the content of the presentation (Do not leave your reader guessing about the presentation.)
  • Be eye-catching, but not gimmicky
  • Not be longer than 12 words
  • NOT use the term “101”

THE SELECTION PROCESS

Early in the year, we post the Call for Proposals and open the on-line Proposal Submission Form. The form remains open until late May. Proposals are collected from many people across Asia. When the deadline has passed, the Program Director collects all of the submissions and removes names and other identifying information.

Mid to late June each proposal is sent to at least three readers for vetting, and rated on a scale. The evaluations are returned to the Director who compares the results and makes the final selections based on the ratings by the judges and a balance of presentation styles and topics.

Results of the selection process will be sent out about August 1.

Successful authors will be sent information regarding submitting extended summaries for the conference book and full papers for the conference proceedings.

 

 

FINAL NOTES

You may submit several proposals, however, we can accept only two from any one presenter.

All presenters will be expected to pre-register for the conference and pay all relevant fees at the time of pre-registration. Presenter registration usually closes in late August. Registration details and dates will be sent to accepted presenters.

Closing date for the receipt of proposals:
May 31, June 10th 2016
