Openings for Professors of English in Pohang, Korea

 

The Department of Language Education (DLE) at Handong Global University (H.G.U https://www.handong.edu/eng/), a Christian-based university located in Pohang, South Korea, invites applications for professors of English beginning next Spring Semester, 2016. Suitable candidates must demonstrate a strong commitment to being a follower of Jesus Christ in all areas of life, including life-long learning, role-modeling and teaching.

Qualifications: Native-speaking professors of English with a Master’s degree and at least 3 years of university teaching experience, or a Bachelor’s degree and at least 6 years of university teaching experience are invited to submit their applications. Preference will be given to candidates who hold M.A. Degrees in TESOL or Applied Linguistics. Professors are hired on one- or two- year contracts that are renewable based on H.G.U. administration approval.

Duties: Teach an average of 16 class credit hours per semester (32 class credit hours per year): Additional hours at overtime rates are also available. Maintain office hours. Actively participate in committee and department meetings. Assist in placement testing of students if required.

Spring and fall semesters are each 16 weeks long. Teachers need to be on campus approximately 2 weeks before the semester begins and must attend University Faculty Retreats held prior to the beginning of each semester. Teachers are also expected to teach one 3-week intensive credit class per academic year (either the summer or winter semesters, depending on roster requirements) and will be paid at the H.G.U. overtime rate.

DLE Professors primarily teach undergraduate academic English classes during the daytime on a Monday/Thursday and Tuesday/Friday schedule. Wednesdays are set aside mainly for Faculty chapel and team meeting commitments. The DLE has recently undergone a curriculum revision process, in which professors may be asked to develop and teach department specific English for Academic Purposes (E.A.P.s) content courses in conjunction with other Handong faculties: Candidates with appropriate credentials and experience in any of the following areas may also be considered: International Languages and Literature/TESOL, Engineering, Life Sciences, Communication Arts, Design, Management & Economics, Psychology & Social Welfare.

Benefits:

a.)      Salary: candidates will begin with a yearly salary of approximately 38,000,000won (including pension contributions), depending on their experience period, with incremental increases for each additional year of teaching experience.

b.)     Semi-furnished, apartment-style housing provided on campus. Depending on the type of housing, monthly maintenance fees and utilities are the responsibility of the Professor and subject to payroll deductions.

c.)      Paid vacation (on average, 8 weeks during each summer and winter semester break)

f.)       Airfare reimbursement of up to 1,200,000won if relocating to South Korea from abroad.

4.       At least 2 candidate referrals per open DLE professor position (DLE to Academic Affairs by  January, 5, 2016);

5.       1st Interview expected to be held on January 14, 2016 (separate evaluators will be organized);

6.       2nd Interview expected to be held on January 15, 2016 (H.G.U. President);

7.       Candidate selection by or shortly after January 15, 2016.
