The KOTESOL National Council meeting scheduled for 10am August 31st failed to reach a quorum due to a train collision north of the Daegu train station early Saturday morning. The collision between KTX and Mugunghwa passenger trains cancelled all northbound rail service for several hours.
A number of Seoul-bound KOTESOL council members were delayed at DongDaegu Station for nearly an hour before the decision to cancel service was announced. For those south of the accident, KORAIL recommended taking commercial bus service to Daejeon or Seoul. The Express Bus Terminal adjacent to DongDaegu Station was immediately flooded with ticket-buyers.
Rail service north of the disrailment was also affected Saturday, with delayed train service from Daejeon.
As arrival in Seoul before noon became impossible, many council members cancelled their travel plans. The official council meeting was scrapped, with informal discussions on various matters following.
No council members were known to be on the colliding trains.
Quorum requirements for the KOTESOL national council are 50% of current council members. The Council is composed of chapter presidents, standing committee chairs, and nationally-elected officials.
